MY PRELIMINARY EXCERCISE

I undertook a preliminary exercise to practice filming and editing. Before leaving class, I had to learn to use the canon 650 and the manfrotto tripod and I had to learn   to bubble the tripod. Also, understanding getting my shots properly in focus. Below is my task:

FOUNDATION PRODUCTION PRACTICAL
A pizza delivery takes place. Person A delivers the pizza to person B.
Shot types and camera movements to include:
  • tracking shot of person A on the way.
  • pan as person A enters room.
  • Over the shoulder shot to show person B greeting / talking
  • over the shoulder shot to show person A's response
  • shot reverse shot to show person B
Show that you can:
  • Use a tripod to keep shots steady (bubble the tripod).
  • Focus the camera.
  • Take care of the camera and tripod.
  • Observe the 180 degree rule.
  • Edit the sequence to make meaning clear. (Tutorial here.)
  • If you wish, you can add titles / sound to the edit.

RESEARCH: DELICATESSEN AND LES BLEUS DE RAMVILLE

On 19th of September, during class we looked at two different opening of films, by using the website The Art of the Title. The website allows students to look at various film openings, trailers or news about various films. Both films portrayed strong opening to appeal instantly to the audience.

The film, Les Bleus De Ramville instantly we can tell from the opening that its sports film based on ice hockey. We can tell by this as the editing of the film has been designed around ice hockey, the first shot is of someone opening sports locker which then it changes shot to someone putting on ice skates which instantly shows to the viewers that it’s about ice hockey. Most of the camera shots seemed to be up close of action or even tiny details such as the team sheet, they zoom into the sheet and focus on certain names, which may indicate they are the main characters of the film. The music used in the trailer, it’s very upbeat sound which follows along ice hockey the game as its very fast game, however the music also emphasizes some tension which might consider in the film there might be tension.

The film, Delicatessen is very different to Les bleus de Ramville. From the opening we can tell straight away how different both the films are as one is about action packed ice hockey, whereas Delicatessen suggest its horror film as the opening scene is man with a knife, also the lighting is very dark which create the sense of horror in contrast to Les Bleus De Ramville where the lighting is more warm. The camera pan around supposedly a kitchen as the film suggest he is cannibalism as one of the shots is of a human hand cut off, also some shots show blood around and pictures of people which might suggest the people he has taken.
The credits opening are panned out but then zoom back which makes it interesting for the viewer, especially as the environment is quite old and rustic for each scene which visually makes it mysterious and again attracts the viewer to watch on. The music used is very different to the ice hockey film, as at first it’s quite spooky with the sound of tiny piano chimes which convey a horror mysterious effect, however it then increase the sound with sound of deep piano chimes as the credits move forward to emphasizes the thriller/horror genre to the viewer.
